What is the First Year Experience (FYE)?

All new students with less than 24 hours of college credit are required to enroll in INTD 105 First-Year Experience (FYE). The FYE program begins the week prior to the first day of fall semester classes and continues through first semester.  It includes activities and a curriculum that assist students in their adjustment to college life. Opportunities are provided for students to become familiar with WAU campus facilities and learning resources, meet the faculty and staff, and get to know the surrounding area. All first-year students are required to attend.

A Warm Welcome from the FYE Director

June 2010

Dear Class of 2014:

Welcome to Washington Adventist University! My name is Dr. Ward, and as the First Year Experience Director, I am thrilled about the program we have planned for you this year. Your college journey is about to begin, and for every college freshman, this is time of excitement, a time of change, and a time of challenge.

The First Year Experience program is a one-credit class designed just for you, to provide you with all the information and support you need to do your very best here at Washington Adventist University. In this class, we help you anticipate and explore the changes, meet the challenges, and create opportunities that will help you achieve success not only here at WAU, but in all areas of your life. There will also be several fun activities throughout the year, as well as a very special Service Learning Project you will participate in as a group.

GATEWAY 10 marks the beginning of your college journey here at WAU. The weekend is full of all kinds of activities, each specially created to provide you with the best foundation on which to build your academic and future success.

What can I look forward to?

New Relationships: meeting new people and making new friends; meeting your new roommate; moving into your dorm room.

New Experiences: discovering all that is unique to Washington, DC; participating in the tradition of the GATEWAY Ceremony; engaging in what may be for you, new spiritual  programs.

New Challenges: adjusting to the changes moving to a college campus brings; leaping off a 20-foot pole at the Ropes Course; identifying and gathering the tools you need for academic success; and, like Jacob, wrestling with topics of spiritual importance. And that's all in the first weekend!
